How many new mums dream of being able to wave a magic wand and have the house cleaned, dinner started and their toddler occupied while she soothes her crying newborn. The Post Partum Doula is new to Ireland and doesn’t carry a wand but can magically bring calm to chaos in those first few days at home after you’ve given birth.
The post partum doula can help the family ease through the adjustments and the changes a new baby brings by emotionally and physically helping the family during the postpartum period. She is not a baby-nurse, nanny or a housekeeper. She is a non-medical, specialized support person who, rather than take over baby care, offers instruction in newborn care and mothers the mother. A doula may watch your baby so you can catch up on some sleep or have a bath. (New mums know that even taking a shower can be tricky business when you have a newborn) More often, mum will mother her baby while the doula brings her meals and drinks, helps occupy the other children, run to the shops, keeps the laundry going, starts dinner for the family, and helps to keep the house organized. Essentially the Post Partum Doula ‘mothers the mother’ while she finds her feet.
So let go of the guilt of having someone help you out in these first few days or weeks! Remember after birth, all women deserve practical support during the early days at home with your newborn (and your Fairy Godmother !)
